Round the central image of the beach in Swanage small images are arranged. It is
a narrative painting, the images are snapshots of significant events, objects and places
that sum up the spirit of the English seaside town in Summer. The challenge when
painting it was to make the images balance each other and relate so that the whole
image reads coherently as an arrangement of shapes and colours which can be
appreciated from a distance, as a patchwork, the smaller images making a decorative
border for the central painting.
