Lit from behind the cat has a ‘halo’ of sunlight as it sits on the bright stone wall. The
horizontal bands of light and dark across the picture are bisected by the vertical lines of
the cat, the trees, the white wall to one side. It is reminiscent of some images by Bonnard,
where the main figure, object or animal in the foreground is set in shadow against the
light and the vividness of colour and contrast are concentrated in the middle distance.
