This painting of a sophisticated urban café bar is presented as a kind of stage set.
The different elements – pavements, figures, umbrellas, elegant facades, form bands
across the picture surface which are emphasised by tonal contrast. The colours are
influenced by the warmth of Sicilian buildings and marble paving stones. Touches of
colour in the table cloths and clothes of the figures enliven the largely monochromatic
image.
