This painting is a snapshot image from travelling in Morocco. When I started making
these small paintings I was involved in creating what I call ‘patchwork’ paintings, large
works made up of an arrangement of smaller images. I decided that many of these
images were very interesting as stand-alone pictures. Working on such a small scale
makes me use simple gestures and keep the marks fresh and telling. The paintings
themselves make very satisfactory objects and work very well when a number of them
are hung close together.
