JILL MIRZA ‘Arles Café with Red Umbrellas’ 14 x 18 in  /  35.5 x 45.5 cm    Acrylic on Canvas Board   2009
The unrelieved heat of this painting is tempered only by the touches of grey in some  of the doors and windows. The strong sunlight emphasises the dark interiors and the  shadows are heavy, stronger in tone than the objects which cast them. The umbrellas  bisect the painting with a slash of brilliant red. A whole range of reds and oranges are  found here with the pink of the girl’s shirt introducing a sharp almost acidic element. The  café is presented as a kind of stage set with the umbrellas and furniture playing roles as  significant as the two figures.
